Thank you so much for caring about the welfare of homeless dogs, and other animals, by considering becoming a foster carer.
Regardless of where you live, rescues all over the UK are in need of caring fosterers to offer dogs a much-needed break from kennelling while they wait for their forever home. There are also some rescues that do not use kennels at all and operate a foster-only programme because the dogs they rescue would not do well in kennels. This includes rescues that are specialists in the rehabilitation of ex-puppy farming breeding dogs.
Every rescue has their own criteria for becoming a foster carer so please contact them directly to find out more.

Abused Pet Refuge Project – (all pets) – UK wide
Created in 2019, the founding trustee felt it was time that something more was done to help those victims of domestic abuse who don’t seek help because they won’t leave a pet behind. Many perpetrators of domestic abuse use threats or actual harm of pets to control partners and children. By fostering pets in secure accommodation, we make it possible for their humans to get out and get help. Our amazing team of trustees, campaigners and fosterers are dedicated to work hard to help rescue all members of the family affected by domestic abuse. We will do our utmost to always find a foster carer who can be trusted to look after the pets of domestic abuse victims until they can be reunited. We save lives, animal and human. We also fight to change the law where appropriate.

We are the largest Sanctuary and Rehabilitation centre of it’s kind in the UK and we are one of the the very few UK sanctuaries that will take highly aggressive and fear aggressive dogs as we have a no kill policy full stop. The Sanctuary is home to just under one hundred and fifty dogs who had run out of chances, most have behavioural issues and need to live in a controlled environment, are aggressive, old, disabled, human scared etc. We work them hard with rehab and give them jobs to do but it’s a fabulously fun place to be and the kids who live here, whether permanently or temporarily don’t miss out on anything including buckets of love and plenty of playtime. In 2017 we set up a small self-funding arm and since then as well as giving sanctuary and rehab to our own animals we offer reduced rate short to medium term rehabilitation spaces for UK rescues and privately owned dogs who are seeking a place of safety and rehab for behaviourally affected dogs who are suffering with various issues whether these be human, environment or animal directed.

MADRA – (dogs) Galway, Ireland
MADRA takes in dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages but we find fosterers most beneficial for our puppies. Although we have a purpose-built kennels, this is not the ideal environment for pups. Puppy fosterers provide a safe place where puppies can learn all about the world and grow into happy, well-socialised dogs. Also, puppies’ risk of contracting the potentially deadly parvovirus is much less in a foster home than in kennels, where most of the dogs have unknown vaccination history.

Raystede – (dogs and cats) Sussex region
- Do you miss the company of a pet but can’t commit to adoption? For example, you might enjoy your holidays or can’t afford a pet of your own.
- Do you have time and patience to offer a pet? Fostering best suits people who are home most of the day, such as those who work from home or are retired.
- Raystede supplies all the animal’s food, equipment, and cover any veterinary costs.
- We offer continued support throughout the foster period.
- Pets need fostering for a variety of reasons and we carefully match pets with the most suitable foster home although we find fostering works best in homes without pets or young children.
- The length of fostering varies depending on the individual animals’ needs but is usually for around 3 months or until the animal finds a new home.

A foster home is a stop gap between an old life and the start of a new life. Dogs that come to us have either been found as a stray and in this case we would have very little information on the dog or the dog has been handed in by an owner unable to continue to provide for their pet. Sometimes these dogs have medical conditions or need socialisation. Fostering helps dogs no end. If we didn’t have wonderful foster homes we couldn’t do what we do.
